08.03.11 - A Celebration of Women
On 8 March 2011, Jersey Post will release their latest stamp issue entitled 'Jersey - Women of Achievement II'. The stamps will feature a second selection of some of history’s most iconic women.
The stamps, presented as a set of four, will be celebrating the lives of Marie Curie, Dame Margot Fonteyn, Florence Nightingale and Mother Teresa. Jersey Post hopes that the stamps will capture the extraordinary achievements of these women.
This issue is particularly significant as it highlights the achievements of Marie Curie. In 1911 Marie Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in recognition to her work with radioactivity. Marie Curie’s most noted achievement was the discovery of radium which was for many years the main element in radiotherapy treatment. The stamps will be a tribute to Marie Curie and her outstanding achievements, and will mark the 100th anniversary of her award.
The Philatelic Design and Marketing team worked together with Marie Curie Cancer Care in order to be able to incorporate their logo within the stamp issue.
“It was a pleasure to work with Marie Curie Cancer Care when developing the stamp series” explained Philatelic Researcher Melanie Gouzinis. “The stamps represent the outstanding hard work and accomplishments of these women. Being such a significant milestone in the remembrance of Marie Curie, it has been an honour to produce this stamp series”.
The stamps will also be featured in the Marie Curie People magazine - a monthly newspaper distributed to staff and volunteers.
