06.05.10 - Size-based Pricing and new stamp issues

On Saturday 8 May, Jersey Post will introduce Size-based Pricing – a postal pricing structure used by postal authorities worldwide, that takes into account the size as well as the weight of items being posted.

To help Islanders understand these changes, a helpful measuring guide and information leaflet on Size-based Pricing (SPB) have been delivered to every household this week. Official measuring tools are also available at every island post office where staff have been fully trained on the new structure.

Size-based Pricing means that from Saturday, all items being posted will fall into one of three simple postal categories – Letter, Large Letter and Packet.

In addition to these new categories, Jersey Post will also be providing greater choice for items being posted locally through the introduction of a Standard delivery service (three-day target) and a Priority delivery service (next-day delivery).

To coincide with the launch of Size-based Pricing, new stamp issues will be released on 8 May. The first stamps to bear the new tariffs are two commemorative issues in the Jersey Postal History series; one featuring Mail Ships and the other, “Regional Definitives” which were originally issued by the British Post Office for use in Jersey before the Island gained postal independence:

1. Local Standard Letter: 36p
2. Local Priority Letter: 39p
3. Local Priority Large Letter: 60p
4. Domestic(UK)/European Letter: 45p
5. Domestic(UK) Large Letter: 72p
6. International Letter: 55p
7. International Large Letter: 80p

In addition to the definitive stamps, the introduction of new Standard and Priority tariffs will affect the self-adhesive ‘minimum postage paid’ stamps which are currently purchased for 37p from post offices and a range of retail outlets island-wide.

To allow sufficient time for existing stocks of self-adhesive stamps to be used up, from 8 May until 31 October 2010, Jersey Post will honour all existing Jersey ‘minimum postage paid’ stamps with a Priority, next-day delivery service.

On 1 November 2010, a new set of three self-adhesive stamps will be issued on for each of the most commonly used tariffs – Local Standard Letter, Local Priority Letter and UK Letter.

Existing stocks of self-adhesive UK minimum postage paid stamps will continue to be valid for Letters from 8 May 2010, but will be valued at 45p after this date.
