01.07.10 - Anemones adhere to latest stamp issue

As islanders head to the beach to cool off from the rising summer temperatures, Jersey Post reminds us of the beauty that can be found in the rock pools and seas around the Island's popular shoreline.

The eighth set of postage stamps in the Jersey Marine Life series will be issued on 6 July and will feature a selection of anemones that are common to local waters. Closely related to jellyfish and corals, anemones use venom filled tentacles to catch and kill their prey.

“Our shoreline is home to a variety of spectacular marine life that we so often take for granted,” stated Melanie Gouzinis, Jersey Post’s Philatelic Researcher. “Our latest stamp issue captures the full beauty of these fascinating creatures which can often be seen at low tide or by sub aqua divers who are able to reach the overhangs and rock walls where they establish themselves.”

The stamp denominations and featured anemones are:

36p – Strawberry Anemone

39p – Snakelock Anemone

45p – Jewel Anemone

55p – Parasitic Anemone

60p – Tube Anemone

72p – Beadlet Anemone

Miniature Sheet (£3 stamp) – Dahlia Anemone

The stamps and associated products have been painted by local wildlife artist Nick Parlett who is well known for his birdlife and wild flower stamps, and who painted the stamps in the colourful Seaweed issue in 2009.
