Calculate your postage - Size-based Pricing
The new Size-based Pricing categories are designed to be simple to use so that customers quickly become familiar with them.
Each of the categories - Letter, Large Letter and Packet - have maximum size, thickness and weight dimensions which your item must not exceed in order to fit within a certain category. For example, your item may be the size of the Letter category but be thicker than 5mm which means it falls within the Large Letter category.
The measuring guide that all households have received can be used to work out the cost of your postage as follows:
Step 1 - check the size
Unfold the guide and align your item with the bottom left-hand corner.

If the item fits within the yellow area, it is a Letter. If it fits within the red area, it is a Large Letter and if it is larger than the red area, your item is a Packet. Please click here for SBP size categories.
Step 2 - check the thickness
If you believe your item is a Letter, you then need to check it is the correct thickness by inserting it through the relevant slot. If your item does not fit through the 5mm Letter slot, your item will be classified as a Large Letter.

Step 3 - check the weight
Each category also has a maximum weight limit. For example if your item is the correct size and thickness for a Letter, but it weighs over 100 grams, your item is categorised as a Large Letter. Most personal correspondance (letters, average greetings cards, bills) weigh no more than 100 grams, but if you are unsure you should visit your post office, or nearest Post & Pay machine before applying any postage.
Please note that the measuring guide is an indicative size and thickness guide and does not provide definitive pricing information. Official measuring guides will be available for use at every post office and should be used to determine actual pricing information.
