10.05.11 - Collection and delivery changes
Jersey Post has announced that postal deliveries on a Saturday will stop from 14 May as part of its plans to cut costs by £5 million per annum.
The changes, which come into effect on Tuesday 10 May, will also see the all-island 17:30 collection stopped and a new 18:00 collection introduced from a limited number of late-posting boxes at key locations around Jersey.
Jersey Post chief executive Ian Carr said: ‘Postal authorities worldwide are experiencing continuing declines in letter mail volumes as more and more customers and businesses turn to the internet to communicate and do business. This situation is compounded in Jersey as new housing and office development continues at a pace resulting in more new addresses which Jersey Post must service on a daily basis. Increased competition also means it’s essential we realign our services if we’re to sustain the future of our postal service.’
In 2006, Jersey Post delivered 51.98 million items to 39,888 local addresses. Today, the number of items delivered has declined by 29 per cent to 37.07 million items whilst local delivery addresses have increase by almost ten per cent to 43,585.
‘Unlike many other national postal operators, Jersey Post receives no government funding from the States of Jersey. To remain self-financing, we need to reshape our business to meet falling demands for traditional postal services in an increasingly competitive communications market. Reducing our costs by £5 million is part of our business transformation plans to ensure the future of a sustainable, local postal service,’ said Mr Carr.
‘We hope customers and businesses will soon adjust to the new arrangements. We will be providing as much information as we can to customers in the coming weeks on what the changes mean for them, including a comprehensive guide to the new postal services which will be delivered to all island homes and businesses.’
