08.06.10 - Roses Bloom on New Stamps

Jersey Post will celebrate, together with the Jersey Rosarians, the 15th Jersey Festival Rose and Flower Show with a new set of six stamps and a Miniature Sheet which will be issued on 8 June 2010.

The inspiration for the new stamp set comes from the very popular Jersey Festival Rose Show which takes places every year in the beautiful grounds of Samares Manor. Now in its fifteenth year, the two-day event continues to grow in popularity and features a wide variety of exceptional floral exhibits and stands created by talented local floral clubs associations and horticultural companies.

In order to select the roses that appear on the new stamps, Jersey Post’s Philatelic Design and Marketing Manager Susanne Lowman and Philatelic Researcher Melanie Gouzinis were invited by Graham Querée, President of the Jersey Rosarians, to attend the show.

“The flowers that feature on the stamps are all prize winners from the 2008 show and were selected for their visual appeal and intriguing stories,” said Susanne Lowman. The stamp denominations and associated flowers are:

36p – Nostalgia
39p – Mountbatten
45p – Royal William
55p – Elina
60p – New Dawn
72p – Lovers Meeting

The £3 stamp within the Miniature Sheet depicts Pride of England and is set within a scene taken from the 2008 rose show itself.

“We were delighted to work with Jersey Post in order to capture the essence of the Jersey Festival Flower through the latest stamp release. Flowers are very visual so we are thrilled to see that each prize-winning variety has been so perfectly illustrated and detailed in the stamps,” stated Graham Querée, President of the Jersey Rosarians.

These stamps introduce a new stamp artist for Jersey Post, Lizzie Harper, who painted the roses for this issue.  Lizzie is based in Powys, England and describes herself as a Natural History and General Illustrator.

The next Jersey Festival Rose and Flower Show will be held at Samares Manor on 26 and 27 June 2010.
