05.11.09 - Industrial action called off

Jersey Post is welcoming the decision to call off the UK postal strikes, which had been planned for today (Friday 6th) and Monday 9th November, following a last minute agreement between the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union. Consequently, a normal volume of mail is expected to arrive in Jersey today and now also on Saturday, which will all be processed as normal.

After protracted talks over the past weeks between Royal Mail and postal workers, progress was finally made late on Thursday afternoon, as the parties agreed to a framework for talks, with what’s being described as a “period of calm”, continuing while they take place. It’s thought that period will now last until at least the New Year.

The General Manager of Postal Services for Jersey Post, Andy Jehan, said, “We wholeheartedly welcome this decision to call off these strikes, and are delighted that the high standard of our services will now continue as normal. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by the UK strike action to date, and to thank our staff for their commitment during the disruption. Hopefully, this period of calm will now lead to a full and final resolution of the issue”.

Jersey Post will continue to issue further information as and when it becomes available. Regular updates are being posted on the Group’s website www.jerseypost.com as well as being communicated to major customers and the Island’s media
