Jersey Post Group launches me:mo

17.12.09 - me:mo launch

Jersey Post Group confirms that its new pay-as-you-go mobile service, me:mo, will be available to Islanders from Saturday, 19 December 2009.

As the first genuinely local competitor to enter Jersey’s mobile telecommunications market, me:mo will be easily accessible, selling its products and services across the island’s Post Office network. The latest handsets and accessories will be available from me:mo’s flagship store located in the main Post Office in Broad Street.

me:mo is the first mobile virtual network to operate in Jersey and whilst the service is wholly owned by the Jersey Post Group, the service will utilise the existing Airtel-Vodafone network allowing me:mo customers to benefit from Vodafone’s existing global roaming agreements.

Gary Whipp, Managing Director of Jersey Post International Development (JPID) stated, “As a locally owned and operated business we are delighted to be able to offer Islanders a new, competitively priced mobile telecommunications service.”  He continued, “As a virtual network, we are able to focus on our products and our customers and not concern ourselves unnecessarily with erecting additional masts in the island. me:mo was able to select the best network out there and as such, we commissioned an independent audit of the various networks’ coverage. Airtel-Vodafone came out on top by some way so we are delighted that we were able to sign a deal.”

Despite using Airtel-Vodafone’s infrastructure, me:mo is completely independent of all three competitors in the Jersey telecommunications market and has absolute control over pricing, products, and in delivering customer service.

At launch, me:mo will offer a choice of pay-as-you-go tariffs, TALK – which provides free calls between me:mo customers and TEXT – which offers free texts between me:mo customers. me:mo will also offer a pay-as-you-go HomePhone shortly, which is topped-up the same way as a mobile phone, contains a SIM card programmed with an ‘01534’ number and carries no monthly line rental.

Mr Whipp added, “Competition is healthy in every industry, driving down price and giving customers greater choice.  As technologies and customer behaviours change it is important that businesses like Jersey Post Group continue to grow and diversify in order to remain profitable and offer core services that the public rely on.”

Following the introduction of number portability on the Island in December 2008, customers are able to transfer onto one of me:mo’s flexible tariffs whilst retaining their full 11-digit number at no additional charge.
