Once upon a letter writing competition

Winners revealed!

Thank you to all the children and schools who took the time to enter our very first writing competition! We were blown away with the enthusiasm and creativity, and thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every entry, which transported us to magical worlds.

We received over 300 entries, which gave our judges a very tough job to do! We’re delighted to share the winning and the highly commended entries with you below. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

We’ll be running the competition again in 2026, so do keep an eye out next Autumn. Thank you!

Meet the winners

Evie, winner

Winner of 5-6 years age category.

“A genuinely creative letter with great vocabulary. We loved all the descriptive language used to paint a picture of Fluffball and to describe the places they explored together. It left us wanting to know more about their adventures.”

Freddie, runner up

Highly commended entrant for 5-6 years age category.

“An intriguing story – Pindlewick sounds like a mischievously good friend. We also loved the illustrations on the pages, which really brought the story to life.”

Drew, winner

Winner of 7-9 years age category.

“This letter encapsulated an historical eruption in the eyes of a survivor. All the descriptive story language created a very real sense of fear and urgency - knowing everything is lost with only a letter of despair and seeking of help for safety. We loved the little personal touches, such as the inclusion of Crumble the dog.”

Paige, runner up

Highly commended entrant for 7-9 years age category.

“ A deeply moving letter, that really captured the imagination. It showed the reader how struggles can be overcome in the most unlikely of places. We loved the signed paw print and could really see Paige living wild and free with the wolves at the end of the story!”

Rowan, winner

Winner of 10-11 years age category.

“We found this letter very funny and well thought out. We love how this entrant has been inspired by a famous children's story and turned it into a letter of compliant and formal warning of things to come. It’s very clever!”
