Jersey Post announces changes to its postal tariffs

Posted • 11 March 2022

Jersey Post will be amending its postal rates from 1 April 2022. The changes will see a below inflation, two-pence increase for local letters and an eight-pence increase on the price of sending to the UK, Isle of Man, and other Channel Islands.

The changes to key stamp prices are summarised below:

56p

UK, IOM and other CI Letter (100g)

82p

European letter (100g)

£1.00

£1.20

Rest of World letter (100g)

£1.75

The price changes are in light of increased costs as Jersey Post continues to face significant challenges within the industry, including:

Outbound mail decline – at the end of 2021, Jersey Post saw a -14% volume decline. This downward trend is forecast to increase in 2022.

Increased International costs - fixed costs and onward delivery into the UK and internationally have continued to grow, particularly transit conveyance fees which are forecast to increase substantially whilst ‘the COVID effect’ maintains the increase in air conveyance costs and surcharges.

Continued investment - new legislation, particularly for parcels and electronic pre-advice customs processes, requires increased investment into new technology systems and facilities.

JCRA licence fee – Jersey Post has seen a 250% increase in the licence fee levied by the regulating body this year.

Niall McClure, Managing Director, Postal and Logistics said: “We remain committed to keeping costs low wherever possible. However, we have seen some of the most unprecedented changes to the international trading landscape for quite some time which has been reflected in our pricing. During the last two years, we have supported islanders and businesses by delaying our price review by six months in 2020 and not increasing local-to-local postal tariffs in 2021. We will continue to offer customers a 2% discount when using our online postage portal to buy and print stamps and labels and our discounted stamp promotion will run again this year.”

In addition to the price changes, Jersey Post would like to remind customers that new Universal Postal Union regulations mean that electronic pre-advice customs data for items being sent off-island comes into effect from 1 April 2022. The requirement to provide electronic pre-advice customs data came into force for items being sent internationally on 1 January 2021, and as of 1 April 2022, this will now apply for any items containing goods and/or merchandise being sent to the UK, Isle of Man and any other Channel Islands.

Electronic customs data is required to ensure that existing, emerging, and future legislative, security and customs requirements in overseas destinations are met. For more information on what providing electronic pre-advice customs data means, visit www.jerseypost.com/ead.
